Our Mission

The Toronto Entomologists' Association (TEA) is a non-profit educational and scientific organization formed to promote interest in insects, to encourage co-operation among amateur and professional entomologists, to educate and inform non-entomologists about insects, entomology and related fields, to aid in the preservation of insects and their habitats and to issue publications in support of these objectives.

The TEA holds meetings every month from September to November and from January to April. Some meetings are online-only, some are in-person-only in Toronto, while others are both in-person and online. At the September meeting, members present about insects they have seen that year. The November meeting is the annual Hess lecture at the Royal Ontario Museum. The March meeting is the Student Symposium, at which students at Ontario universities give talks about their research. At the April meeting, members give show-and-tell presentations about insects they have reared.

The TEA publishes a newsletter, Ontario Insects, three times per year. A seasonal summary, Ontario Lepidoptera, is published annually.

Members of the TEA may ask to be included in the TEA's permit from the Ontario government for raising Monarch and swallowtail butterflies.

The TEA's constitution is provided here. It was last updated in February 1996.

Ann Gray is the TEA representative on the Tommy Thompson Park Users' Group (TTPUG). Tommy Thompson Park is a urban natural area minutes from downtown Toronto containing the Leslie Street Spit. It is is part of Toronto Parks but it is managed by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority. The two bodies have set up a Users' Group of this park which meets twice a year to be briefed on current plans and to present input on behalf of the organizations they represent. Ann is also the volunteer naturalist for the park.

Karen Yukich monitors the City of Toronto's High Park Resource Group and looks out for any TEA-relevant news from High Park. Karen is also associated with ProtectNatureTO. The TEA share this group's concerns about protecting the wildlife and natural areas of Toronto, although it may not agree with every position it may take.
