REARING TECHNIQUES

Clear plastic film containers

  1. used for eggs and small larva; maxium 3-1st stage OR 1-4th stage (Red Admiral)
  2. remove lid once per day; change plant as required OR every 5 days
  3. clean frass ONCE PER DAY with running water and wipe dry
  4. DO NOT use for overwintering

Salsa jars

  1. used for last stage larvae or as overflow containers
  2. remove lid once per day; change plant ONCE PER DAY
  3. clean frass ONCE PER DAY with running water and wipe dry
  4. good travelling jars; good overwintering jars

Large vacuum jar

  1. used for any stage larvae with plants in water (to allow life cycle photography)
  2. used inverted with only a partial seal (see demo)
  3. clean frass ONCE PER DAY; change plant as required or every 3 days

Upright aquarium with plexi-glass cover

  1. used for large larvae and colonies;
  2. use "kleenex" or paper towel to catch frass and remove ONCE PER DAY
  3. vacuum stray frass with "dust-buster" and wask occaisionally

Other tools

  1. small scissors; forceps; photo lense;
  2. toothpicks; "Q-tips";
  3. small paint brush to transfer small larvae to fresh food plant
  4. rubbing alcohol to clean up after deaths
