The
key to successful overwintering is to keep the larva or pupa in a COOL
climate.
- NOT AT FEEZING TEMPERATURES
- NOT TOO DRY (especially important for hibernating
larvae)
- A NON-DEFROSTING refigerator or bar fridge is
best for this purpose
Large pupa (Swallowtail size)
- Diapaused swallowtail pupa are photo sensitive
to lengthening days and will emerge in February, March or Apri if
they are not kept cool
- Containers are not necessary
- Place in refrigerator in before December 21st
- Bring out again in mid-April
Small pupa or larvae
- Salsa jars can be used used to overwinter small
pupa or larve
- can hold many larvae (helpful for moisture retention)
- Place larvae on "thoroughly dried" food
plants or on similar plants
- Glue small pupa to tooth-picks with non-toxic
children's glue and place in the jar on a kleenex tissue
- Remove lid ONCE EVERY TEN DAYS
- *Successful with Tawny Emporer larvae, Silvery
Checkerspot larvae
- Bring out larvae when their foodplant is available
- OPTIONAL warm larve few a few kours once or twice
during the winter
- DO NOT USED PLASTIC FILM CONTAINERS!
